Lifting Accidents

AMERIND’s Safety Team recently completed an analysis on our TEIP (Tribal Employee Injury Protection) program and found that Injuries while Lifting (including lifting heavy objects, lifting light objects, reaching for objects and dropping objects while lifting) was the a major cause of workplace injury claims.

Workplace Safety Tips for Lifting:

Educate employees about the dangers of lifting

Ask others for help when lifting heavy objects

Through training, employees learn how to lift properly

Management can minimize lifting tasks by providing lifting equipment and mechanical devices

Repetitive motion injuries are prevented by stretch breaks and exercises

Ensure storage areas are adequate and accessible

Ensure loading docks are visible and well maintained

Ensure workers exercise, stretch or warm-up before work and throughout the day

Have all equipment and materials within reach of workers who need them

Ensure employees are trained in proper lifting for their specific, individual tasks

Management should provide new employees with special attention and supervision to ensure lifting is done properly

If used, back support belts are to be worn properly and used only for lifting

Some Workplace Accident Prevention Tips:

Prompt and Accurate Reporting- Ensure first reports are accurate, complete and descriptive.

Employee Training & Awareness - Conduct specific training for: Slip, Trip and Falls; Safe Lifting Practices; Defensive Driving are just a few! Ensure employees know how to do the job safely and are supervised.

Investigate Accidents - Determine cause and adjust the procedures to be proactive.

Personal Protective Equipment - Wear the right equipment for the job.

Safety is no accident!
